Many freethinkers have described religion as a crutch to explain the unexplainable. For example, humans once explained thunder by saying it was Thor throwing a lightning bolt, but now that we have a more realistic theory (that is, that lightning is caused by electricity), we go with that. Many people have an understanding that science is in this way slowly pushing religion out of the world, and that one day, God will no longer be in the picture at all.
But what is important to realize is that this has already happened. Nothing is best explained by God. God is gone from our theories about the world. In fact, God is already known to be totally irrelevant in every sphere of study, even moral philosophy, and has been for thousands of years although this is still not common knowledge. There is nothing left for him. All his mystery has been swept away as the shadows where we expected to find him were illuminated with great floodlights and we found nothing but an endless void. Humanity has climbed Mount Olympus and found nothing but snow and rocks. He has not one scrap of the world to rule over.
Science is not the new religion – it’s an entirely new school of thought. It is one that demands of our beliefs that they be coherent, not just with themselves but with the facts, and that we have reasons to believe what we believe. Really, it’s not so unreasonable that religion would have been created. But we don’t need it anymore. We have something better.
If God does exist, we have bound him in chains. Forever.
