{"id":744,"date":"2007-02-07T00:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-07T07:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.audiomind.us\/blog\/?p=744"},"modified":"2012-06-05T23:28:39","modified_gmt":"2012-06-06T03:28:39","slug":"photoshop-tutorial-color-to-bw-and-back-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.audiomind.us\/blog\/2007\/02\/07\/photoshop-tutorial-color-to-bw-and-back-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Photoshop Tutorial: Color to B&amp;W and Back Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have seen this question asked over and over again on numerous online Photoshop (and other digital graphics) forums:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em><strong>How do you create a black and white image where only part of the photograph is in color??<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m here to tell you that this is one of the easiest tasks to accomplish in Photoshop and requires almost no Photoshop experience.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Below you&#8217;ll find that I&#8217;ve developed a simple step-by-step tutorial on how to do it:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1) We start with a colored photographic image of your choosing.\u00c2\u00a0 You need only to decide what portion of it you want to keep in color.<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u00c2\u00a0 For this picture of my son I&#8217;ve decided to keep the tires in color for this demonstration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/100_0008.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"396\" align=\"left\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2) Now copy the background layer. You can do this by dragging and dropping the first (top) layer onto the &#8216;<em>create a new layer<\/em>&#8216; icon, like what Ive demonstrated below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/background%20layer%20copy.JPG\" alt=\"\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3) Now let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s convert the top layer picture to monochrome (also called black and white). There are many ways to do this and probably the most well known way (and preferred way IMO) is to use the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153channel mixer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. However, for this tutorial I will choose instead to use the desaturation tool by typing <em>Control+Shift+U<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/fabien%20b&amp;w.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"736\" height=\"396\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4) Now let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s add a layer mask to the top layer. This can easily be done by simply clicking the button, like what I&#8217;ve pointed to below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/top%20layer%20mask.JPG\" alt=\"\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5) Zoom into the area of the photograph you want in color and <strong>select the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153layer mask\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/strong>you just created by clicking on the layer mask once it has been added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/select%20layer%20mask.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6) Now select the Brush tool and choose black as the foreground color. The brush size will depend greatly on the area you will paint.\u00c2\u00a0 Be sure to set the hardness to 100%. Carefully paint on the layer mask (in black) all the areas you want to reveal.\u00c2\u00a0 This step make take just a little while depending upon the areas you will be painting over.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/audiomind.us\/tutorials\/photoshop%20b&amp;w%202%20color%20tutorial\/brush%20stroke.JPG\" alt=\"\" border=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7.
